Coaches
Responsibilities
We are
thankful for all of our volunteer coaches; our program would not
exist without you.
To ensure
that all of our players are being coached in the CYO spirit, all
coaches are required to fulfill certain requirements prior to the
beginning of their respective seasons. Some requirements must be
fulfilled once only, some periodically with an on-line follow-up,
and some annually.
1.
Background Check. All
first-time coaches must pass an Archdiocesan background check. Forms
are available at the parish,
school office, or on
the Archdiocesan website:
Returning coaches must complete a background check once every two
years. To verify your current background-check status, contact:
office@sjsissaquah.org
2.
Play Like A Champion. All
first-time coaches are required to attend the "Play Like a Champion"
Training. This three-hour seminar introduces all volunteers to the
CYO coaching philosophy. This is a one-time training only, and to
date, no follow-up training has been planned.
Additional information on this training, and upcoming training
dates can be found at the Archdiocesan website:
To verify your certification status, contact:
cyo@seattlearch.org
3.
Safe Environment Training.
All volunteers within the Archdiocese must attend a one- time, three
hour training program entitled "Safe Environment - Called to Protect
for Ministries.” Online refresher courses will be required in
subsequent years. More information about this training can be found
on the Archdiocesan website:
register under St. Joseph School- Issaquah as the primary location.
Families may contact the school office to verify past training
certification (office@sjsissaquah.org).
4. St. Joseph
School Volunteer Orientation. All first-time
volunteers working with St. Joseph students are required to attend
an in-house volunteer training session led by the school
principal. This orientation takes place at the beginning of each new
school year. Dates TBD. An online, follow-up version of this
training is required of all returning volunteers.
School families may contact the school office (office@sjsissaquah.org)
to verify past training certification.
5.
Archdiocesan Coaches Meeting. All
coaches are required to attend the annual CYO coaches meeting in
Seattle. At least one member of the each coaching team or their
representative must attend. This meeting is generally held one week
prior to the beginning of the respective regular season in the
evening. Failure to attend the meeting will result in a one game
suspension for the coach and forfeit for the team. At this
meeting, the CYO philosophy of coaching is reviewed, rules and
regulations are clarified and questions are answered. Specific
information regarding meeting dates, times, and locations is posted
on the Archdiocesan website. (Generally, two coaches meeting are
held prior to the season. Coaches may attend either of the two
meetings to fulfill their meeting-attendance requirement.)
6.
Pre-Season Coaches Meeting.
Coaches may be required to attend a pre-season coaches meeting for
their respective sport. At this meeting, information specific to
your season, field / court availability will be discussed and
equipment will be distributed. This meeting will be arranged by your
sport coordinator.

Athletic Scholarships
CYO is committed to the dignity and worth of each child it serves,
regardless of physical talents, mental strength, or emotional
health, and hopes that the same respect for life will become a part
of his or her value system. CYO wants each child to know that they
are wanted and loved.
In that spirit, CYO athletics is committed to offering opportunities
for all children to play sports, regardless of ability to pay.
Athletic Scholarships are available in every sport that St.
Joseph/MQP offers. Please contact the Parish Athletic Directors –
Mario & Andrea Padilla at (425) 753-2916 for more information or to
nominate a child for a scholarship. Your call will be kept
confidential

Gifts, Trophies,
Awards Recommendation:
St. Joseph/MQP CYO Athletics is a volunteer
organization staffed by volunteers, administrated by volunteers, and
coached by volunteers. Every measure is taken to keep all of our
athletic programs as inexpensive as possible while making them
available to everyone in our parish and school, grades K through 8.
To that end, we strive to keep participation costs
to a minimum. The initial registration fee is intended to cover the
costs associated with jerseys, equipment, league fees, and
field/court fees.
The only additional requirements placed upon
participants and their families is that participants have their own
transportation to and from practices and games, and that
participants be ready and able to play for their respective St.
Joseph/MQP teams in accordance with the code of conduct as stated
above.
ALL OTHER UNIFORM, APPAREL, EQUIPMENT, TROPHY, AND
TEAM/COACH GIFT PURCHASES ARE CONSIDERED EXTRANEOUS AND SHALL ONLY
BE CONTEMPLATED WHEN UNANIMOUS AGREEMENT, AMONG ALL PARENTS AND
PARTICIPANTS INVOLVED, IS REACHED IN ADVANCE OF ANY SUCH PURCHASE.
Additionally, St. Joseph/MQP Athletics restricts
the use of St. Joseph School, St. Joseph Parish, Mary, Queen of
Peace and CYO logos. Anyone wishing to use these logos, after
unanimous approval by all parents and participants involved, must
submit a request to the Parish Athletic Coordinator and Principal
for an express sanctioning of such use. For details concerning the
specifics of such requests, please contact the Parish Athletic
Coordinator.

Prayer before
Games
Prior to all games played by St. Joseph/MQP teams,
the following prayer will be read to introduce and set the tone of
the game. This prayer is to remind everyone who and what we stand for.
“Strong and faithful God,
as we come together for this contest,
we ask you to bless these athletes.
Keep them safe from injury and harm,
instill in them respect for each other,
and reward them for their perseverance.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.”

Reporting Problems
Internal Problems: (Within St. Joseph/MQP)
The chain of command is as follows: Problems should first go the
coach, then the coordinator then the parish athletic coordinator.
If problems are with coaches, individuals should
try and work them out up front with the coach. If this does not work
then go to the specific sports coordinator and then the parish
athletic coordinator. If it’s a problem with a sports coordinator,
then go the parish athletic coordinator.
External Problems: (Outside St. Joseph/MQP)
The coach is first informed who takes it to the coordinator who then
informs the parish athletic coordinator. The parish athletic
coordinator and specific sport coordinator will take it to CYO. All
communications to CYO go through the Parish Athletic Coordinator.
