3rd Grade
In
third grade Religion, the students will learn of God’s love for them and
gain a deeper understanding of their faith and the rich traditions of the
Catholic Church. Students are invited to participate in the life of the
church. The mission and structure of the Church are presented, with
emphasis on the life giving presence of the Holy Spirit. Saints and
Christian heroes are offered as role models. Activities, and prayers
stress the universal nature of the Church as a sign of God’s kingdom.
Lesson
topics explore Jesus’ role in the student’s lives: as light of the
world, Savior, teller of Good News and friend. Next, students explore the
Church as created by the Spirit, filled with the Spirit, marked by the
Spirit, gifted by the Spirit, missionary and saintly. The emphasis on
signs and wonders extends to an exploration of the sacraments, the Church’s
celebrations of grace incorporating God’s word, God’s love, belonging,
healing, and service. The People of God are presented in all their
different roles —friends, family, parish, diocese — and as one people
who are sent. Students come to understand the Church as a living sign and
promise of the kingdom.
Prayer:
There will be daily prayer times using
various prayer experiences, both formal and spontaneous.
Formal
prayers taught include: the Beatitudes
and an examination of conscience.
Third
graders participate in a special way (reading, singing, etc.) in one of
the monthly all-school Masses.
